Dance: "Dance Showcase- summary of the previous work"

Over the couple of weeks, we have been preparing for a dance performance that will take place tomorrow in our college (Leyton Sixth Form College) at 19:30, with free entry. The performance will consist of a ballet, breakdance and capoeira dance genre. It will also include a joint performance with the dance group from a different class. We have done this joint performance because pupils from my Musical Theatre class are also doing the dance course in a different class. In the ballet performance we have the music taken from the musical ‘West Side Story’ where they also have a ballet scene. Just like them, we will also showcase a temporary ballet. The choreography has been partly created by our dance teacher but mostly by the whole class’ ideas that we joined together to create this piece. It has been decided that for the ballet performance we will be wearing black vest tops, long black trousers or black non-see-through leggings/ tights, and of course with proper ballet shoes with hair tied back. In terms of the breakdance performance and capoeira, we will be wearing the same outfits. Black tops, black trousers/ shorts, everything black apart from colourful cap hats. The breakdance will be began with the choreography created by our dance teacher, where we will be dancing to a song by Jenny Jackson- Rhythm Nation. Straight after will be my solo with Ruth, Cagla, Courtney and Isabel’s.

After the solos we will be performing the capoeira piece, including the capoeira duos, straight after that, we will return to the solos. First one to do theirs is Marta, Nancy, Daniel and Rafa. After these solos, we will finish our breakdance performance which was partly created by our teacher and us. The biggest struggle we all faced was with the capoeira duos and solos. Through our rehearsal and practises, we were able to create god group choreography ad join everything together. In terms of the individual pieces, each and every one of us had to choose a song they want to perform their solo to and create their own choreography. I chose the song “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé where I can show off my best dancing skills in freestyle. I am continuously practising my choreography and checking if I am doing everything with grace, precision and passion, and correct technique. I am practising every day after college hours so that I am perfect at what I love to do in life- perform. I think that we are well prepared for the show. Tomorrow’s day will consist of last and final rehearsals which includes the final run to see if everything is where it should be. I cannot wait to perform tomorrow!

During the performance I have to pay attention and make sure that I do the ‘turn out’ in ballet correctly, and the timing with breakdance when dancing to Jenny Jackson’s song. These were my goals, and now after all the rehearsals, I know that I have made big improvements and now I have to make sure that I don’t make a silly mistake in the actual show. Over the weeks of practising I have noticed the significant improvement in my ballet skills. I am paying attention to every detail and hints given to me by the teachers and friends in my class so that that I can improve even more as a performer. My dance technique has improved a lot in every way e.g. dynamic, precision of my moves, timing, flexibility, and everything else. Through tough and assertive training over the two years, I can confidently state that I have acquired technicalities in dancing and can call myself a professional artist in Musical Theatre.

Dance:" Breakdance and Capoeira-summary of previous work"

Over the course of a couple of weeks, the whole class tried to finish and polish off their solo’s as well as the group performance. With our teacher we have sorted out entire work and decided on the order in which we will perform. We will begin our performance with a dance called Capoeira, at the beginning of the choreography all of us dance and later we split off to two person groups where we dance with the other person. The second part of the show will be our solos which will last between 40-60 seconds each. After the performed solos our grand finale will be breakdance where we perform the whole choreography together as a class, only at the end we will have a couple of seconds to perform our breakdance solos. In our next lesson I will try to film our whole performance to show you the level of our dance skills as well as what the project will roughly look like. In this week I will attach a video showing my main solo (40-60 seconds) and the breakdance solo (10-20 seconds).

First I'm pasting mine and Ruth's group choreography:

Here I'm pasting the video when I practise my short breakdance solo:

Also I'm adding video when I practise my another solo on which I still work on:

Here I'm pasting few pictures which describe some breakdance movements. Some if these poses I used to create my solo.

Dance:" Breakdance and Capoeira"

For the last few weeks we practised 2 different dance styles in the class, and we plan to continue this until May. First dance is  Breakdance and another one is Capoeira. In Breakdance we did a piece and also in groups we had to add some movements into this choreography and put these pieces all together. Also we started to create Capoeira pieces in groups which we will be using in a performance later on.

Here I will put all my research which I did about these 2 dance styles:

Breakdance:

Breakdance (also called breaking, b-boying or b-girling) is a type of dance that is done by people who are part of the hip hop culture. B-boy means boy who dances on breaks (breakbeats). Breakdancing was invented in the early 1970s in African-American and Puerto Rican communities in South Bronx in New York City. The dance style evolved during the 70s and 80s in big cities of the United States.
Breakdancing uses different body movements, spins, arm movements, leg movements, all of which are done to the rhythm of hip hop music. Breakdancing was most popular in the 1980s but continues to be common today.
There are four categories in breakdance. They are power moves (windmill, tomas, airtrax and so on), style moves, toprock, downrock (footwork), and freezes (chair, airchair and so on). Many of moves come from gymnastics and kung-fu.

Breakdancers dance with breakbeats. The difficulty of their skills decides the better b-boy. One of the biggest breakdance contests in the world is Battle of the Year (BOTY). It has several different types of contests. There are one-on-one battles, team battle, contest of showcase and so on. B-boy battle means dancing on random music. In 2013, the team coming from South Korea, Fusion MC, won the championship. Floorriorz coming from Japan got the award of best show.

Here I'm pasting a video as a example:

Another stile is Capoeira :

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game.It was developed in Brazil mainly by West African descendants with native Brazilian influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known for quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques.
The most widely accepted origin of the word capoeira comes from the Tupi words ka'a ("jungle") e pûer ("it was"), referring to the areas of low vegetation in the Brazilian interior where fugitive slaves would hide. Practitioners of the art are called capoeiristas.
On 26 November 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage" by UNESCO.

Here I'm pasting video to show you example of this kind of dance:

My comments:
From these 2 dances I prefer Breakdance over Capoeira because I danced a bit of Breakdance before and I can connect easier with this dance than with the other one. The Capoeira is really interesting dance but this is definitely not my style. Now there is a lot of work to do because I have to learn some new movements that are difficult for me.Also I need to make my arms and hands stronger to be able to lift up my body.

Dance-" Preparing two dance choreographies for the showcase"

From last week we stared to preparing 2 dance choreographies for the showcase which will be on 4th December. We did one choreography for song from musical Fame -"Im gonna live forever" and another one is created for Bruno Mars song - "Uptown funk" . These two choreographies are in completely different styles what  will makes our show more interesting and varied.

* Now I will give you more information about this songs and dance:
1) Fame -A stage musical based on the 1980 musical film Fame has been staged under two titles. The first, Fame – The Musical conceived and developed by David De Silva, is a musical with a book by José Fernandez, music by Steve Margoshes and lyrics by Jacques Levy. The musical premiered in 1988 in Miami, Florida. As Fame on 42nd Street, it was performed Off-Broadway at the Little Shubert Theatre on 42nd St from 2003 to 2004.
De Silva had produced the 1980 film about students at New York City's High School of Performing Arts. The critically and commercially successful film was followed by a six-season television series, and the musical. The musical is significantly rewritten from the previous adaptations, with an almost entirely new score. The film is referred to several times in the script and in two songs.
It tells the story of several students who attend the High School of Performing Arts, among them fame-obsessed Carmen, ambitious actress Serena, wisecracking comedian/bad boy Joe, quiet violinist Schlomo, "talented but dyslexic" dancer Tyrone, determined actor Nick, overweight dancer Mabel, and poor dancer Iris.
Since its first production, Fame – The Musical has had hundreds of professional and amateur productions in every major language.

*Here is the lyric of the song :

" I'm goona live forever"

Baby, look at me and tell me what do you see?
You ain't seen the best of me yet
Give me time, I'll make you forget the rest
I've got more in me, and you can set it free
I can catch the moon in my hand
Don't you know who I am?
Remember my name

(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly (High)
I feel it coming together
People will see me and cry
(Fame) I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame
(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
Baby, remember my name
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)

Baby hold me tight, 'cause you can make it right
You can shoot me straight to the top
Give me love and take all I got to give
Baby I'll be tough, too much is not enough, no
I can ride your heart 'til it breaks
Ooh, I got what it takes
Remember my name,

(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly (High)
I feel it coming together
People will see me and cry
(Fame) I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame
(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
Baby, remember my...
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)

(Fame) I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame
(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
Baby, remember my...
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)

(Remember my name)
(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly (High)
I feel it coming together
People will see me and cry
(Fame) I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky...

*Here you can have a look on this song:

Five of his singles are counted among the best-selling singles of all time. Mars has landed 5 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 since his career launched in 2010, faster than any male singer since Elvis Presley. In total, he has had six number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
Mars is known for his stage performances and retro showmanship. He is accompanied by his band, The Hooligans, which besides playing a variety of instruments such as electric guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, drums and horns, also serves as dancers and background singers. On stage, Mars is able to sing, dance and play a wide range of musical styles, including R&B, reggae, and soul music.

If we show up, we gon’ show out
Smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy

Homework:
Our task was this week to memorise the lyric of the first song( Fame -"I'm gonna live forever") and practise two dance choreographies for both songs to be ready after half term for the next lesson. Also I will try to put the videos during this week for you to give you idea of what we doing on lessons.

What I need to work on :
I need to work on second choreography because I found this dance more difficult than the first one .I have to work on my timing in this choreography, I need to memorise some steps in order and be more relax while I dance this choreography.
